Latvian Court Sentences People Smuggler to Six Years for Transporting 21 Migrants

A Latvian court has sentenced a man to six years in prison for participating in the organized smuggling of undocumented migrants across the Latvia-Belarus border. After serving his sentence, he will be expelled from the country with a five-year ban on re-entry. Prosecutors did not disclose his nationality.

Investigations revealed that the man joined an organized group after responding to a Facebook job posting that sought a driver to transport people within the European Union.

Facebook Used for Migrant Transport Recruitment

According to Latvian prosecutors, the man replied to an online ad seeking drivers for transporting people around the EU.

He then began communicating with members of the smuggling group and agreed, for a financial reward, to participate in illegal migrant transportation.

The group consisted of at least three individuals.

The investigation found that the group’s organizer assigned tasks, coordinated actions, and provided the driver with detailed instructions, including destinations.

Van Rented in Lithuania for Smuggling Operation

In April 2026, according to the court, the convicted man rented a van in Lithuania.

He then headed to the Istra area in Latvia’s Ludza district, near the Belarusian border.

He was instructed to pick up people at a designated spot after they had been illegally brought across the EU’s external border by the organized group.

Investigators determined the migrants had crossed onto Latvian territory through a hole cut in the border fence.

Van Contained 21 Migrants

The driver loaded 21 people into the vehicle.

The group consisted of 19 Somali nationals, and one person each from Algeria and Morocco.

None had documents, visas, or permits allowing legal entry or stay in Latvia or any other EU country.

The court found that the driver’s role was to continue along a designated route and transport the migrants to another EU country.

The journey, however, was cut short.

Latvian Border Guard Intervenes

Shortly after picking up the migrants, the van was stopped by members of the Latvian State Border Guard.

The case was then brought before the district court in Latgale.

The court sentenced the man to a six-year prison term.

Upon completion of his sentence, he will be deported from Latvia with a five-year ban on entry.

The court also ordered the confiscation of the mobile phone used in the crime. In addition, the value of the vehicle used—EUR 7,000—is to be seized for the state.

A similar case in Central Europe also resulted in a prison sentence. Another smuggler who transported 11 Syrian migrants and tried to escape police was ultimately convicted thanks to DNA evidence.

Latvia Steps Up Eastern Border Security

Latvia’s border with Belarus is also the external border of the European Union and the Schengen Area.

In recent years, Latvian authorities have significantly reinforced both physical border defenses and security operations.

Since August 11, Operation Vilkatis has been underway with the goal of restricting illegal border crossings from the east and targeting organized smuggling groups.

Over 11,000 Attempts Stopped So Far This Year

Pressure on the Latvia-Belarus border is reflected in Border Guard statistics.

In a single day, border officers prevented 26 people from crossing illegally.

Since the start of 2026, Latvian authorities have deterred or stopped 11,121 people from illegally entering the country.

This year, the Border Guard has initiated 151 criminal proceedings against 110 individuals in connection with people smuggling or facilitating illegal stay in Latvia.

The case also illustrates how smuggling networks are not only recruiting professionals but are also using ordinary social networks and job postings to find drivers. According to prosecutors, in this instance the man connected with the group through Facebook.

Latvia’s security forces continue heightened checks along the eastern border. The pressure along the Belarus route remains high, and tackling smuggling networks has become one of the country’s top security priorities.
