Chinese companies buying major European firms: MediaMarkt and Saturn set for takeover

BRUSSELS – Chinese companies are steadily consolidating their presence in the European economy, with the electronics retail giants MediaMarkt and Saturn now next in line. On November 3, 2026, the European Commission conditionally approved the takeover of their parent company Ceconomy by Chinese e-commerce conglomerate JD.com. The deal, estimated at around €2.2 billion, reflects a broader trend: Chinese investors already control major European carmakers, tech firms, and industrial equipment manufacturers.

MediaMarkt and Saturn set for change in ownership

Germany’s Ceconomy operates more than 1,000 stores across eleven European countries, with MediaMarkt and Saturn as its flagship brands.

JD.com first announced its plans to acquire Ceconomy in July 2025.

Following more than a year of regulatory scrutiny, the final approval was granted on November 3, 2026.

Importantly, as of November 4, the transaction had not yet been finalized. Both companies expect the deal to close in the coming days.

The European Commission has attached conditions to the takeover, aiming to prevent distortion of competition by Chinese subsidies.

Volvo: Swedish icon under Chinese ownership

Volvo Cars is one of the most prominent examples of Chinese investment in the European automotive industry.

The Swedish carmaker was acquired in 2010 by China’s Geely Group from the American company Ford.

Despite the change in ownership, Volvo Cars has preserved its Swedish identity—including research centers and production in Europe.

However, the majority owner remains the Chinese automotive group.

This means that a car carrying the iconic Swedish Volvo badge now belongs to a group controlled by Chinese investors.

MG: Iconic British car brand under Chinese control

Another notable case is MG, a car brand with deep roots in the United Kingdom, renowned for its sports models for decades.

Today, MG is owned by Chinese state automotive giant SAIC Motor.

In recent years, MG has made strong inroads into the European market, especially with affordable electric vehicles and other passenger cars.

Although many drivers still associate the brand with Britain, MG is now backed by Chinese ownership.

KUKA: German robotics company joins Chinese-owned Midea

Chinese investments in Europe extend far beyond carmakers and retail chains.

KUKA, from Germany, is a leading manufacturer of industrial robots and automation technologies.

In 2016, the Chinese group Midea, also known for its home appliance business, took over KUKA.

Since 2022, KUKA has been fully owned by Midea.

The acquisition sparked debate in Germany about the need to protect strategic technologies, as industrial robotics is crucial to the automotive, mechanical engineering, and electrical sectors.

Syngenta: Global agricultural powerhouse

Syngenta, originally Swiss, is another major example. The company specializes in plant protection products, seeds, and agricultural technologies.

In 2017, Syngenta was acquired by China’s ChemChina.

It later became part of the larger Syngenta Group.

This deal shows that Chinese investors are interested not only in consumer goods but also in technologies underpinning food production.

Why is China acquiring European companies?

Acquiring an established European company can offer Chinese investors multiple advantages.

They gain access to well-known brands, retail networks, advanced technologies, and a broad customer base, bypassing the need to build everything from scratch.

For European firms, the arrival of a new owner can provide capital for investment, modernization, and growth initiatives.

However, these takeovers also raise concerns about the protection of technology, future competitiveness, and the long-term independence of European industry.

Chinese ownership does not automatically equate to unlawful activity or guarantee the Chinese state full access to a company’s data. Each investment should be assessed according to its specific ownership and legal structure.

EU Commission scrutinized Chinese subsidies

During the review of the JD.com – Ceconomy deal, the European Commission investigated the state support JD.com receives in China.

The Commission identified preferential loans, tax breaks, and other subsidies which could give JD.com an unfair competitive advantage in the EU market.

JD.com has therefore made specific commitments regarding financing and ensuring rivals have access to its logistics and technology services.

These rules will apply for ten years, with compliance subject to monitoring.

Similar concerns are informing the EU’s upcoming industrial regulations. As reported by Aktualizovane.sk, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has cautioned against excessive trade barriers.

Chinese investments are transforming Slovakia

The transformation of Europe’s economy is keenly felt in Slovakia as well.

Near Košice, a new Volvo Cars automobile plant is under construction. While Volvo is a classic Swedish brand, its majority owner is China’s Geely group.

Chinese investors are also active in neighboring Hungary, with BYD and CATL each building factories there.

These projects bring jobs and investment but have also raised questions over environmental standards and working conditions.

We previously reported on inspections in Hungary in an article about CATL halting works and BYD receiving fines due to stricter local oversight.

The importance of developing European technologies is further underlined by a program allowing Slovak companies to receive up to €800,000 to support strategic technologies.

Will anything change for MediaMarkt and Saturn customers?

For ordinary shoppers, there are currently no announced changes to store terms or closures.

JD.com has said it intends to grow the retail network and strengthen online sales, logistics, and technology services.

Whether future benefits will include lower prices, broader ranges, or faster delivery remains uncertain at this time.

The change in ownership also does not mean that customers’ data will automatically be transferred to China. Companies operating in the EU must comply with European data protection rules.

Europe faces a major question

Chinese investment in Europe is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it brings much-needed capital, new manufacturing capacity, and commercial opportunities. On the other, it can increase dependency on foreign owners in key sectors.

Some Slovak Members of the European Parliament have voiced their concerns. Miriam Lexmann, for instance, criticized Europe’s dependence on Chinese suppliers in an interview with Aktualizovane.sk.

The European Commission is trying to enhance the competitiveness of domestic companies without closing the European market to foreign investors.

The MediaMarkt and Saturn case shows that Chinese companies are no longer just suppliers of affordable goods—they are now the owners of brands European customers have known for decades.

The key question remains: how can Europe reconcile its open markets with safeguarding its strategic economic interests?
