United Airlines Posts $1 Billion Profit, But Rising Fuel Costs Cloud Outlook

US airline United Airlines increased its net profit by 8.5 percent year-on-year to approximately $1.03 billion in the third quarter of 2026. Revenue also rose by 17.4 percent, driven mainly by strong demand for air travel. Despite these positive results, the airline warned that rising fuel costs are undermining its outlook for the end of the year.

The company expects expensive jet fuel to significantly weigh on its financial results in the final months of the year. As a result, its fourth-quarter profit forecast falls short of analysts’ expectations.

United Airlines Sees Growth in Both Profit and Revenue

In the third quarter, United Airlines reported net profit of around $1.03 billion, marking an 8.5 percent year-on-year increase. The airline had posted $949 million in profit during the same period last year.

Revenues surged 17.4 percent from a year ago. The strong performance was fueled by continued robust demand for travel, with multiple segments growing—including premium classes, business travel, and basic economy fares.

The airline managed to boost revenues without significantly expanding flight capacity, as passenger demand remained high despite rising airfares.

However, strong results do not mean that all financial indicators have improved. Higher operational costs, particularly for running aircraft, are eroding part of the gains from ticket sales.

Fuel Price Surge Hits Airline Financials

The biggest challenge for United Airlines is the sharp rise in jet fuel prices. The company’s fuel expenses in the third quarter increased year-on-year by about $1.8 billion.

Fuel is among the most significant costs for airlines. When prices spike, companies are forced to find ways to offset the higher expenses—whether by adjusting ticket prices, optimizing flight schedules, or cutting other costs.

United Airlines continues to benefit from strong demand, which allows for higher revenues. But if fuel costs rise at a faster pace than revenue, profitability could decline even if passenger numbers remain high.

Energy prices are also being affected by geopolitics. Tensions in the Middle East and uncertainty on oil markets may keep fuel prices elevated and make cost planning difficult in the coming periods.

Q4 Forecast Lags Expectations

United Airlines anticipates that the average jet fuel price in the fourth quarter will reach around $4.80 per gallon (approximately 3.78 liters). Compared to the third quarter, this would represent a roughly 23 percent increase.

The company therefore expects adjusted earnings per share to be between $0.50 and $1.50. By contrast, analysts on average had forecast earnings of around $1.76 per share.

The gap between the company’s forecast and market expectations indicates that higher costs may have a greater-than-expected impact at year-end. United still expects strong revenues, so the key question remains how much of that income can be converted into profit.

For investors, the main points to watch will be fuel price movements, the airline’s ability to pass on higher costs to ticket prices, and any changes in travel demand.

Challenges Affect the Entire Airline Sector

Rising fuel costs are a problem for the entire airline industry. Rival Delta Air Lines already downgraded its full-year profit outlook in October after warning of a substantial increase in expected fuel expenses.

Other carriers are facing similar pressures. Higher costs can limit their ability to expand flight offerings and could force further increases in ticket prices.

If fuel prices continue to rise in the coming months, airlines will have to choose between passing on a portion of those costs to travelers or limiting capacity growth. Excessive ticket price hikes, however, could deter some customers from flying or push them to seek cheaper alternatives.

According to data from the US Department of Labor, airfares in the US rose nearly 23 percent year-on-year by September. Sector-wide fuel costs climbed even more sharply. US airlines spent $42.9 billion on fuel in the first eight months of 2026—$13.2 billion more than the same period last year.

Airfare Increases May Persist in 2027

Fuel price trends could also hit travelers in Europe. Should air travel costs stay high, airlines may continue raising fares or reducing the number of flights on certain routes.

Ryanair has already warned of the potential for significant airfare hikes in 2027. Ultimately, developments will depend on oil and jet fuel prices, competitive pressures, passenger demand, and the broader economic climate.

For customers, this means it will pay to monitor ticket prices and airline conditions when planning travel. Higher fuel costs may not translate into identical fare increases on every route or with every carrier.

Strong Demand Is Not Enough Amid Rising Costs

The United Airlines results show that an airline can grow both revenue and passenger numbers while still coming under pressure on margins. The decisive factor in the coming months will be how fuel prices evolve and how well the carrier can keep costs under control.

The outlook for the fourth quarter is therefore more cautious than the summer results. If fuel prices stabilize, the pressure on financials could ease. But if they remain high, airlines may again adjust ticket prices or flight plans.
