Austrian Police Dismantle Drug Ring Smuggling Cocaine in Mercedes Disguised as Ski Trip

VIENNA – Austrian police have uncovered an international drug smuggling network that trafficked cocaine from Spain to Vienna using a luxury Mercedes, modified specifically to conceal narcotics. To avoid suspicion, the car was filled with ski equipment, with the driver posing as an ordinary tourist. Officers seized more than 30 kilograms of cocaine, valued at an estimated €3 to €3.5 million, along with over 27 kilograms of hashish. The investigation took an unexpected turn when one suspect allegedly threatened to kill his ex-wife, prompting law enforcement to intervene earlier than planned.

The Vienna police revealed details of the extensive operation on Monday, 2 November 2026.

The investigation ran from autumn 2025 through March 2026, spanning several European countries.

Viennese detectives described the seizure as the largest cocaine confiscation by their unit in the past decade.

Discreet Garage Concealed a Drug Hub

Detectives first caught wind of the group through tips from Vienna’s nightlife scene.

According to police findings, a bar in the Meidling district was a hot spot for cocaine deals, with suspicions also emerging of illegal weapons trading.

Investigators soon focused on a 43-year-old Serbian national.

The man did not have official residency in Austria, but police say he used a rented apartment and garage in a residential building in Vienna’s Liesing district.

This location served as a handover and distribution point for the drugs.

Detectives tracked the suspects’ movements and gradually uncovered connections between members of the group.

International networks like this have also been investigated by Slovak police, who recently dismantled a group suspected of distributing dozens of kilograms of methamphetamine and cocaine.

Mercedes Stuffed with Skis Hid the Real Cargo

The most notable piece of evidence was a luxury Mercedes S-Class used by the group for drug transport.

Inside, police found skis, ski boots, and other sporting equipment.

According to investigators, this was no coincidence.

The driver was meant to appear as a tourist heading for winter sports.

In reality, the car was being used to smuggle cocaine.

The drugs were hidden in a special compartment behind the rear seats, operated by a magnetic mechanism.

Detectives said the hiding place was so cleverly designed that ordinary searches failed to reveal it.

Specialists from the Austrian Federal Criminal Police Office eventually found an additional 10 kilograms of cocaine hidden in the vehicle.

Cocaine Routed from Spain through Several Countries

The investigation revealed an extensive trafficking route.

The drugs originated in Valencia, Spain.

The smugglers sent shipments via France, continued by ferry to Genoa, Italy, and then transported them to Austria by land.

In January 2026, detectives monitored the handover of roughly 20 kilograms of cocaine in Vienna.

During the operation, officers also recorded the distribution of about 600 grams of the drug to other suspected dealers.

Police then detained the main suspect and several other individuals.

An additional group member, a 31-year-old Croatian citizen, tried to leave Austria in the modified Mercedes.

He was stopped at the Spielfeld border crossing toward Slovenia.

A detailed vehicle inspection revealed the remaining cocaine.

Smugglers often use unusual methods to conceal drugs. Aktualizovane.sk previously reported on a gang that transported over 30 kilograms of cocaine concealed in whipped cream cakes.

Police Seized Drugs Worth Millions

Austrian detectives seized large quantities of narcotics, cash, and other evidence during the operation.

According to the Vienna police’s official report, the seizures included:

  • 30.16 kilograms of cocaine – the largest amount seized by the Vienna District Criminal Police in ten years
  • 27.46 kilograms of hashish – cannabis resin suspected for further distribution
  • 435.6 grams of marijuana
  • €16,850 in cash
  • A modified smuggling vehicle with a hidden drug compartment

The estimated street value of the seized cocaine was around €3 to €3.5 million.

This figure represents a police estimate, not the amount actually earned by perpetrators.

International drug trafficking remains a challenge elsewhere in Europe. In Spain, for example, police broke up a group allegedly smuggling hashish from Morocco using helicopters.

Investigation Interrupted by Threat to Woman’s Life

While tracking the group, detectives uncovered another serious suspicion.

One gang member, a 38-year-old Austrian, had been stalking his ex-wife for an extended period.

Police said he already had a record for violent conduct and making dangerous threats.

Investigators learned that he had threatened his former wife with death.

The woman also suspected that she and her children were being monitored.

Police declared the danger to her immediate.

Detectives therefore prioritized safeguarding the woman’s life over continuing long-term surveillance of the drug ring.

In cooperation with prosecutors, officers moved to arrest the suspect.

Arrest Revealed Loaded Gun and Tracking Devices

During the operation, detectives found a loaded firearm in the 38-year-old’s car center console.

They also confiscated devices possibly used for tracking other people.

According to police, the man likely used a GPS device to monitor his ex-wife’s car.

The search also uncovered small amounts of cocaine and marijuana.

Investigators stated their intervention was motivated chiefly by concern for the woman’s life.

Major Christoph Hackl from the Vienna District Criminal Police Bureau said preventing a possible murder took precedence over continuing the anti-drug operation.

Police stressed they averted a potential murder, but this does not mean a specific plan to carry it out was proven or that the suspect was convicted of attempted murder.

Violence by intimate partners is a serious security issue also addressed by Slovak authorities.

Six Arrested, Multi-Country Investigation, and Years in Prison

The operation extended beyond Austria.

Through international police cooperation, one additional suspect was arrested in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Searches also took place in Valencia, Spain.

Austrian police reported a total of six arrests at the core of the investigation.

Five of the arrests were tied to cross-border drug trafficking, while one primarily involved threats against the ex-wife.

Austrian media report that members of the group have now been sentenced to a total of 17 years and two months in prison, combined across several individuals.

This total reflects sentences for multiple convicts, not a single person.

European Gangs Adopt Sophisticated Methods

The Vienna case demonstrates that drug trafficking often relies on seemingly innocuous infrastructure.

Residential garages, ordinary passenger cars, or legitimate businesses may all be misused for concealing and distributing narcotics, according to investigators.

In October 2026, Slovak police also investigated cases where suspects used ingenious storage methods for drugs.

During “Operation KAUF,” officers seized drugs with an estimated value of at least €160,000.

In another case, detectives raided a property in Turzovka, Kysuce, where they confiscated cannabis and a suspicious crystalline substance.

Although these are separate investigations, all show the vital role detectives play in uncovering drug crime.

Greatest Success: Seizing Drugs and Saving a Life

The Vienna detectives consider the operation a major blow against organized drug trafficking.

Seizing more than 30 kilograms of cocaine marked a ten-year record for their unit.

But officers emphasized they had to alter their priorities during the case.

When the threat to a woman’s life became urgent, the group’s surveillance took a back seat to her protection.

The results include a major drug haul and the dismantling of a smuggling ring – and, in the police’s own assessment, the prevention of potentially fatal violence.
